Description
This print reproduces Jacques Reich’s ink drawing of Thomas Jefferson. The shop file dates the sheet 1899 to 1920, the span of Reich’s American portrait campaign. The drawing is a linear bust after earlier likenesses, a working or presentation graphic rather than a life portrait. Reich also published a 1902 etching of Jefferson, sold separately here.
This is not Rembrandt Peale’s 1800 White House Collection oil. Reich, a Hungarian-born New York printmaker, supplied collectors with presidential heads in etching and in ink. New-York Historical Society’s Reich collection documents that output. The listing follows the ink drawing named in the shop file, a twentieth-century graphic of the third president.
