Description
This print reproduces Thomas Sully’s 1856 oil of Thomas Jefferson in the U.S. Senate Collection (31.00006.000). In December 1856 Sully painted two half-length replicas of the life study he had begun at Monticello in March 1821. Register number 885 was painted for himself between December 11 and 29. After Sully’s death, his grandson sold that replica to the Senate in 1874 for $200. It hangs in the Lyndon B. Johnson Room.
The 1821 sitting produced the American Philosophical Society half-length, finished in 1830, and the West Point full-length of 1822. The Senate canvas is a later replica, not a new life portrait. Jefferson had been dead thirty years. The shop file correctly calls it a recreation of the 1821 life portrait. It is not Rembrandt Peale’s 1800 White House Collection oil.
