This print reproduces Henry Ulke’s 1875 oil on canvas of Ulysses S. Grant, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Ulke, a German-born Washington photographer and painter, knew Grant in office. The canvas is about 45 by 35 inches.
Grant sits in a civilian coat, a presidential likeness rather than a Union uniform. Thomas Le Clear’s later oil, about 1881, is among White House additional portraits and is sold separately here. The White House Historical Association lists Ulke 1875, not Le Clear, as the Collection portrait of the eighteenth president.
Ulke had photographed and painted Washington public men since the 1860s. Grant sat as a civilian president, not in the 1860s uniform.
