Description
This print reproduces William Valentine Schevill’s oil portrait of William Howard Taft. Schevill (1864 to 1951) painted Taft as a solid civilian in a dark coat. The National Portrait Gallery holds the picture. Some catalogs date a Schevill Taft about 1910, overlapping Zorn’s White House sitting.
The White House Historical Association lists Anders Zorn’s 1911 oil, not Schevill, as the Collection portrait of Taft. That Zorn is sold separately here. Schevill’s canvas is a different object. Do not call it the White House picture. It is a painted studio likeness of the twenty-seventh president, later chief justice.
