Description
This print reproduces James Reid Lambdin’s 1848 oil on canvas of Zachary Taylor, National Portrait Gallery NPG.76.7. Lambdin painted the Mexican War general in uniform during the campaign year, before the March 1849 inauguration. The shoulder insignia is visible. Taylor was already famous as Old Rough and Ready from Florida and from Buena Vista.
The White House Collection portrait listed by the White House Historical Association is Joseph H. Bush’s oil, about 1848, sold separately here. That Bush is the mansion’s picture of the twelfth president. Lambdin’s 1848 canvas is a different sitting, the general as candidate rather than the White House state portrait. Taylor died in office on July 9, 1850.
