Description
This print reproduces Jonathan Eastman Johnson’s 1895 oil on canvas of Benjamin Harrison, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Johnson painted the twenty-third president after Harrison left office in 1893.
Harrison stands or sits in a dark coat, a late Gilded Age state likeness. Johnson, already known for genre pictures and for portraits of public men, also painted Grover Cleveland for the White House. A separate 1900 canvas by Theodore C. Steele, painted in Indiana, is sold separately here. Steele’s picture is not the White House Collection portrait.
The canvas is about 60 by 40 inches. Harrison, grandson of the ninth president, stands as a Gilded Age Republican after one term.
