Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1858 oil on canvas of Franklin Pierce, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Pierce stands in the grand manner, about 62 by 47 inches. Congress had commissioned Healy in 1857 to paint living presidents for the Executive Mansion.
Healy finished this standing canvas in Chicago on May 15, 1858. It is not the seated 1853 half-length he painted the year Pierce took office. That earlier picture is cataloged by the National Portrait Gallery as NPG.65.49 and is sold separately in this shop. The two poses are easy to confuse. This listing follows the standing White House canvas.
