Description
This print reproduces Charles Willson Peale’s George Washington after the Battle of Princeton. Peale painted the first version in 1779 for the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, now at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He then made more than a dozen replicas. Washington stands at ease after the fight, blue commander-in-chief sash across his chest, hand on a captured cannon. Nassau Hall appears in the distance. An attendant holds the horse.
Princeton University holds one replica dated 1779 to 1782. The shop file uses 1780, which falls inside that replica campaign. This is not the unique 1784 Nassau Hall battle picture (PP1034), which shows Mercer wounded and was not repeated. Peale sold the after-the-battle type as a diplomatic image of victory already won.
