Description
This print reproduces a full-length military portrait of George Washington standing between a cannon and his horse, the river and a fort in the distance. The shop file names Valentine Green and 1785. Green did engrave Washington after John Trumbull. His best-known plate, dated January 15, 1781 at the Metropolitan Museum, follows Trumbull’s 1780 canvas of Washington and William Lee on the Hudson, a different composition.
The cannon-and-horse pose matches Trumbull’s later type often called Washington at Verplanck’s Point, painted in 1790 and given to Martha Washington. Because the file date and the pose do not agree, this copy describes the picture you see and does not assign Green 1785 as a fact. A separate Green plate after the 1780 Lee picture is sold as PP1037.
