Description
This print reproduces Charles Willson Peale’s 1784 oil George Washington at the Battle of Princeton, painted for the College of New Jersey and long installed in Nassau Hall. The Princeton University Art Museum holds the picture. Trustees commissioned it to replace a portrait of George II whose frame had been wrecked by an American cannonball in the battle.
Washington stands in uniform with a sword. Behind him the fight continues. At the right, figures tend a wounded officer, a reference to General Hugh Mercer, who died after Princeton. Peale had served as a militia officer in the campaign. This 1784 Nassau Hall picture is a battle scene. It is not the earlier after-the-battle type, of which Peale made many replicas, sold separately here as PP1036.
