Description
This print reproduces a full-length image of George Washington on the battlefield of Trenton. Washington stands in uniform, right foot forward, left hand on his sword, right hand holding a telescope toward a young groom with a rearing horse. Behind him lie a ruined cart and cannon. A blasted tree is at the right. That invention is John Trumbull’s. He painted it after a 1792 sitting. The prime full-length is at the Yale University Art Gallery. The Metropolitan Museum holds a smaller version of about 1792 to 1794.
The shop file dates this listing 1845, a later print after Trumbull rather than the 1790s oil. The 1845 sheet is a reproduction of Trumbull’s Trenton type, not a new life portrait. Thomas Cheesman’s 1796 engraving of a related Trumbull is sold separately as PP1029.
