This print reproduces an 1846 hand-colored lithograph of George Washington issued by Sarony and Major in New York. The title on the historic sheet is Washington. The Patriot, the Statesman, and the Warrior. Napoleon Sarony and Henry Major were among the leading lithographers of the 1840s, selling portraits to a broad public.
The image is a popular print, not a life portrait. Washington had been dead since 1799. Mid-century lithographers copied earlier painted types, often after Gilbert Stuart, and sold them as parlor pictures. The National Portrait Gallery and the Library of Congress hold Sarony and Major presidential lithographs from this moment. Color on the original sheets was applied by hand.
