Description
This print reproduces Jonathan Eastman Johnson’s 1891 oil on canvas of Grover Cleveland, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Johnson painted Cleveland between the two nonconsecutive terms, after the 1888 defeat and before the 1892 return.
Cleveland sits in a dark coat, a Gilded Age state likeness about 54 by 42 inches. Johnson also painted Benjamin Harrison for the White House. Anders Zorn’s separate Cleveland portrait is sold here as PP1039 and is not this canvas. The White House Historical Association lists Johnson 1891 as the Collection picture of the twenty-second and twenty-fourth president.
