Description
This print reproduces Elmer Wesley Greene’s 1956 oil on canvas of Herbert Hoover, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Greene painted Hoover more than twenty years after the presidency ended.
Hoover sits in a dark suit, an elder statesman after his long post-presidential career in famine relief and the two Hoover Commissions. The canvas is about 50 by 40 inches. It is not a 1929 sitting. The White House Historical Association lists Greene 1956 as the Collection picture of the thirty-first president.
Greene painted an elder Hoover after later public service, not the 1929 officeholder.
