James A. Garfield, Balling

Price range: $14.00 through $131.90

Ole Peter Hansen Balling’s oil of James A. Garfield, distinct from Calvin Curtis’s 1881 White House canvas.

SKU: PP1044 Categories: ,

Description

This print reproduces Ole Peter Hansen Balling’s oil portrait of James A. Garfield. Balling, a Norwegian-born Union veteran, painted American public men after the Civil War. The National Portrait Gallery holds his Garfield. Some catalog entries date a Balling Garfield as late as 1906, long after the assassination.

The picture is a commemorative likeness, not Calvin Curtis’s 1881 White House Collection portrait, which is sold separately here. Garfield had been in office only months when he was shot. Balling’s type shows him as a bearded civilian in a dark coat, a studio memorial rather than a sitting from the Executive Mansion.

This listing is a contemporary print after the painting, not the original oil. Choose fine art paper, luster photo paper, or mounted canvas.
