This print reproduces Calvin Curtis’s 1881 oil on canvas of James A. Garfield, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881, and died on September 19. Curtis’s canvas is a painted record from that short presidency, oil on canvas on fiberboard, about 38 by 31 inches.
Garfield sits in a dark coat, a quiet bust rather than a full-length state picture. Ole Peter Hansen Balling also painted Garfield. That later Balling canvas is at the National Portrait Gallery and is sold separately here. The White House Historical Association lists Curtis 1881, not Balling, as the Collection portrait of the twentieth president.
