Description
This print reproduces John Vanderlyn’s 1816 oil on canvas of James Madison, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Vanderlyn painted Madison during the presidency, a bust about 26 by 22 inches.
Madison wears a dark coat and white cravat. The War of 1812 had ended the year before. Vanderlyn, who had studied in Paris, gave the White House a French-trained likeness of the fourth president. A later 1829 oil by Chester Harding, painted at Montpelier in retirement, is sold separately here. The product name on this listing keeps the shop’s historic spelling Madion.
