Description
This print reproduces George Caleb Bingham’s 1850 oil portrait of John Quincy Adams. Bingham, the Missouri painter of river and election scenes, also made portraits. Adams died on February 23, 1848, after collapsing in the House. A Bingham dated 1850 is therefore a posthumous or studio picture, not a White House sitting.
The White House Collection portrait of John Quincy Adams is George P. A. Healy’s 1858 standing canvas from the congressional series, sold separately here. Bingham’s type is a different head. Do not call this the White House picture. It records Adams as the old man of the House, the former president who returned to Congress.
