Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1859 oil on canvas of John Tyler, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. The canvas is about 62 by 47 inches. Healy visited Tyler in Virginia after Congress commissioned the presidential series in 1857.
Tyler sits in a dark coat, a paper in his hand, the first vice president to succeed on a president’s death. Healy painted a smaller 1859 replica of the White House picture, now at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG.70.23). That replica is sold separately here. The White House Historical Association dates the Collection canvas 1859. Some older lists have used 1864 for a Healy Tyler. This listing follows WHHA 1859.
