Description
This print reproduces Elizabeth Shoumatoff’s 1968 oil on canvas of Lyndon B. Johnson, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Shoumatoff had painted Franklin Roosevelt in 1945, the unfinished sketch from Warm Springs. Johnson chose her for his White House likeness. The canvas is about 32 by 27 inches.
Johnson sits in a dark suit, a smaller, more intimate picture than the huge state portraits of the nineteenth century. Shoumatoff also painted Lady Bird Johnson for the Collection in 1968. The White House Historical Association lists this Shoumatoff as the Collection picture of the thirty-sixth president.
