Description
This print reproduces Albert Rosenthal’s 1903 etched portrait of Theodore Roosevelt. The shop description states that Rosenthal worked with permission from John Singer Sargent’s original. Sargent painted Roosevelt at the White House in February 1903, finishing on the nineteenth. The president stands at a stair newel in a dark suit.
Rosenthal (1863 to 1939), a Philadelphia etcher, translated painted and photographic likenesses into prints for collectors. This plate is an etching after Sargent, not the White House oil. The Sargent canvas is sold separately here as PP1071. Rosenthal’s sheet lets the 1903 pose circulate as a fine print.
