Description
This print reproduces a photograph of Theodore Roosevelt on horseback at Montauk, Long Island, in 1898. The First United States Volunteer Cavalry, the Rough Riders, returned from Cuba after the Spanish-American War and were discharged at Camp Wikoff in September. Roosevelt posed there shortly before the regiment went home.
He later wrote that in Cuba he had not worn the side of his hat turned up, a detail that distinguishes this stateside portrait from wartime snapshots. The image shows the colonel in khaki and slouch hat, not the 1903 Sargent oil. The National Portrait Gallery and the Library of Congress hold related Rough Rider photographs from the Montauk encampment.
