Description
This print reproduces Rembrandt Peale’s 1800 oil on canvas of Thomas Jefferson, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Peale painted Jefferson as vice president, just before the election of 1800. The canvas is a bust, about 23 by 19 inches.
Jefferson wears a dark coat and white cravat against a warm ground. This 1800 life portrait is not the later porthole type Rembrandt developed in the 1820s, and it is not Mather Brown’s 1786 London oil, sold separately here. The White House Historical Association lists Peale 1800 as the Collection picture of the third president. The mansion purchased it in the nineteenth century.
