Description
This print reproduces Mather Brown’s 1786 oil on canvas of Thomas Jefferson. The National Portrait Gallery catalogs the picture as NPG.99.66, a bequest of Charles Francis Adams. Jefferson sat in London in the spring of 1786 while minister to France, on a visit to John and Abigail Adams. Brown, a Massachusetts-born pupil of Benjamin West, was then fashionable in London.
Adams commissioned Jefferson’s portrait. Jefferson commissioned Adams’s. The two pictures were meant as a pair. Jefferson received them in 1788. This is not Rembrandt Peale’s 1800 White House Collection bust, sold separately here. Brown’s Jefferson is the diplomat in London, painted years before the presidency.
